What is a Body Lift- Belt Lipectomy?
This is a body contouring procedure that concentrates on removing hanging fat and skin, typically after a big weight loss.
Who is a suitable candidate for panniculectomy surgery?
Many people have experienced massive weight loss, for example after gastric band surgery or a post-pregnancy complication, resulting in large amounts of fat below the belly button. Skin and fat may extend to the knees, hips, and genitals and also hang around the back area. This hanging ‘pannus’ can make even everyday life difficult and cause its own health issues. Ideal candidates should have been at a stable weight for several months.
A panniculectomy can be performed as a stand alone procedure or combined with other body shaping procedures such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, arm lift and breast surgery to achieve an overall improved appearance. It is often combined with liposuction of the remaining parts and muscle tightening.
How is a body lifting procedure performed?
A vertical incision is made from the lower area of the sternum (breast bone) to the pubic bone and a second horizontal incision is made at the pubic area (up to 360 degrees around the body, hence called as Belt Lipectomy). Excess overhanging fat & skin are removed and any remaining tissues are smoothed out. The skin is then pulled together and closed with sutures.
Duration of operation: 1.5 – 2 hrs (General anesthesia)
Hospital stay: 1 night
What should I expect after surgery?
You can expect bruising, swelling, temporary discomfort and pain, which will all be managed by the doctors and nurses caring for you. Drains may be left in place for between 3-5 days to help speed up your recovery, by removing excess fluids from the body. Any leakage, asymmetry, lumps, surface irregularities, hardness, discomfort and discolouration are normal at this time and will disappear within the first few weeks.
A specially designed surgical, elastic binder will be fitted on you immediately after surgery, and this will be worn for up to 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery. This garment will minimize swelling, improve skin retraction, protect the treated areas and keep you comfortable. You can still go to the bathroom whilst wearing the garment and after a certain time period you will be able to remove it whilst washing. This will help towards the final results.
How long will it be before I can get back to my normal life?
This should not be rushed. A 7-14 night stay in Turkey is recommended. Most people can slowly start back to work within 3 weeks. Walking is recommended from early after the operation but vigorous exercise should be avoided for up to 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. It will take up to a year before the scars flatten, soften & fade. Final results will not be seen until up to 12 months after surgery.
